Here are several examples of exteriors in architectural photography by Paul Chaplo. We recommend using large format (4X5-inch) photography for exteriors combined with a palette of film that we match to lighting conditions, subject, and application. For example, for the metallic copper-clad dome, we use a film that can portray metallic surfaces well. In low light conditions, we switch to films with better characteristics for such conditions. Photographing exteriors is our favorite part of a project as the facade design is often the monumental, iconic and dramatic element of the building. We use an optical bench camera with micrometer gear-driven controls that allow us to control perspective accurately. In addition, we are careful to match lighting to building orientation to show the shapes, planes, and forms of the property in their most flattering light and angle of view. It is quite typical for us to arrive on location and be set-up before sunrise to photograph a project with an east-orientation; this is part of our dedication and attention to detail that we put into each project.
